Italian high schools face major reform with focus on critical thinking and AI

A sweeping overhaul aims to modernize curricula, emphasizing analytical skills, artificial intelligence, and emotional education

Italy’s high school system is set for a significant transformation. A reform project promoted by Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara and coordinated by Loredana Perla seeks to redefine the educational mission of secondary schools. The new guidelines could come into effect in 2027.

One of the key changes is the separation of history and geography, reversing the current combined subject. History programs will be extended to include contemporary geopolitical developments, while maintaining a focus on Italian and Western history.

Mathematics will also see a shift in approach: less emphasis on technical procedures and more on conceptual understanding and real-world application. Mistakes will be reframed as a valuable part of the learning process, and stronger links will be built between math, science, and the history of ideas.

Artificial intelligence will play a central role, both as a subject of study and as a critical tool. Students will learn how AI works, its limitations, and its ethical implications.

Alongside these innovations, literature and philosophy will be reinforced with a more dynamic, discussion-based approach. The reform also introduces education on relationships and emotional awareness, aiming to promote respect, inclusion, and social responsibility. The proposal is now under review by the education community before final approval.
