MALAGA (SPAIN) (ITALPRESS) – Another success, another triumph, tagged Jannik Sinner. The extraordinary year of Italian tennis could not have ended any other way, namely by winning the second consecutive prestigious salad bowl. The South Tyrolean beat Tallon Griekspoor and gave the Italian team the decisive 2-0 point in the Davis Cup 2024 final against the Netherlands, staged on the indoor concrete courts of the “Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena” in Malaga. The tennis player from San Candido, world number one, in the second singles of the match, defeated his rival from the “Orange” team, number 40 in the international ranking, with a score of 7-6 (2) 6-2. It was a much more hard-fought victory than expected thanks in part and above all to a deluxe Griekspoor. Earlier, in the first singles of the final act, Matteo Berrettini, world number 35, who is getting closer and closer to his best form (that of 2021, when he reached the final at Wimbledon), beat Botic Van De Zandschulp, 80 of the Atp rankings, with the score of 6-4 6-2.
This was the second Davis Cup victory in a row for the Azzurri, led by Filippo Volandri, and the third triumph in history for the Italian men’s national tennis team after the first success dated 1976. Six, on the other hand, are the times in which the Azzurri have surrendered in the final act. For the Netherlands by contrast it was the first Davis Cup final.
For Sinner an incredible season with the top of the world rankings, the winning of two Grand Slam titles (the Australian Open and the Us Open), success in the Atp Finals and now the triumph-bis in Davis. Super year, in general, for all of Italian tennis. The Davis Cup-Billie Jean King Cup pairing, which came thanks to Wednesday’s victory by the girls led by Tathiana Garbin, was historic, to be added to the Sinner titles and Paris2024 medals (the gold in women’s doubles by Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini and the bronze in men’s singles by Lorenzo Musetti), the finals reached at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in singles by Paolini, and the mixed doubles title won at the Us Open by Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Tennis Italy, then, is master of the world.
