Gianni Mattioli, one of the founding figures of Italy’s Green movement and a prominent environmental advocate, has died at the age of 86.
The announcement was made by Angelo Bonelli, co-spokesperson of Europa Verde and a member of parliament, who described Mattioli as one of the most influential voices in Italian environmentalism. Bonelli praised his ability to combine scientific expertise, civic engagement and political commitment throughout a career that spanned decades.
Born in Genoa in 1940, Mattioli graduated in physics from Rome’s Sapienza University and later became a professor at the institution. Alongside his academic work, he emerged as a leading environmental activist and played a key role in Italy’s anti-nuclear movement alongside fellow campaigner Massimo Scalia.
Mattioli entered parliament in 1987 as a member of the Green List and remained in the Chamber of Deputies until 2001. During that period, he served as Undersecretary for Public Works in the governments led by Romano Prodi and Massimo D’Alema before becoming Minister for Community Policies under Prime Minister Giuliano Amato.
Throughout his life, Mattioli advocated sustainable energy policies and environmental protection grounded in scientific research. His death marks the loss of one of the most respected figures in Italy’s ecological movement and political landscape.
