January inflation accelerates to 1.5 percent

ROME (ITALPRESS) – In January 2025, the National Index of Consumer Prices for the Whole Community (NIC), before tobacco products, increased by 0.6 percent compared to December 2024 and 1.5 percent compared to January 2024 (from +1.3 percent in the previous month), confirming the preliminary estimate. This is announced by Istat. The trend acceleration is mainly due to the increase in the prices of Regulated Energy Goods (from +12.7 percent to +27.5 percent), but also to the easing of the decline in those of Non-Regulated Energy Goods (from -4.2 percent to -3.0 percent) and the slight acceleration in the prices of Recreational, Cultural and Personal Care Services (from +3.1 percent to +3.3 percent). These effects were only partly offset by the deceleration of prices of Services related to transport (from +3.6% to +2.5%).In January, “core inflation,” net of energy and fresh food, remained stable (at +1.8%), while that net of energy goods alone rose slightly (from +1.7% to +1.8%).The trend dynamics of prices of goods showed an acceleration (from +0.2% to +0.7%), while that of services remained stable (at +2.6%). The inflation differential between the services and goods segments narrows to +1.9 percentage points (from +2.4 in December 2024).The trend rate of change in the prices of Food, Household and Personal Care Goods remains at +1.7 percent, while that of High Frequency of Purchase products increases (from +1.7 percent to +2 percent). The cyclical increase in the overall index reflects price developments in Regulated (+14.2%) and Unregulated Energies (+2.7%), Processed and Unprocessed Food (+0.9% both), Durable Goods (+0.6%), Services Related to Housing, Recreational, Cultural and Personal Care Services, and Miscellaneous Services (+0.4% for all three). In contrast, a restraining effect on the cyclical dynamics of the general index is due to the decrease in the prices of Services related to transportation (-2.3 percent).Acquired inflation for 2025 is +0.9 percent for the general index and +0.5 percent for the core component. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) decreases by 0.8 percent on a monthly basis, due to the start of the winter clothing and footwear sales (not considered for the NIC index), and increases by 1.7 percent on an annual basis (accelerating from +1.4 percent in December 2024), confirming the preliminary estimate. The national consumer price index for blue- and white-collar households (FOI), excluding tobacco, rises 0.6 percent from December and 1.3 percent from January 2024. “In January 2025 inflation rises slightly to 1.5 percent from 1.3 percent in December 2024. This trend mainly reflects the exhaustion of deflationary pressures in Energy prices (-0.7 percent from -2.8 percent in December), following the marked acceleration in prices of the regulated component (+27.5 percent from +12.7 percent),” Istat comments. “In the food sector, the trend dynamics of prices remain stable at values slightly above the rate of inflation, as does that of the ‘shopping cart’ (firm at +1.7 percent). Among Services, prices of those related to transportation slow down, while the pace of growth of Recreational, cultural and personal care services rises. In January, core inflation remains stable at +1.8 percent.”
