AOUN “CONTATTI PER PROROGA CESSATE IL FUOCO” CON ISRAELE
“We are in progress to extend the period of ceasefire – between Lebanon and Israel – and I will not spare any effort to put an end to the abnormal conditions that Lebanon is currently experiencing.” The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, said this during the meeting with Members of the Parliamentary Commission for the protection of civil monuments and the prevention of intentional destruction, according to a note from the Presidency.
On Thursday, 16 April a ceasefire of 10 days between Lebanon and Israel took place. “In all the communications and consultations I am conducting, preserving the Lebanese sovereignty throughout the territory is my main objective, and the negotiations in preparation are based on a complete ceasefire of Israeli aggression, the Israeli withdrawal from the Lebanese territories, the return of prisoners, the deployment of the army up to the international borders and the beginning of the reconstruction of what was destroyed during this war,” continued Ambao.
The head of the Lebanese state reiterated that “the American support that President Donald Trump has communicated to us, together with the support of the brothers and friends countries, has given us an opportunity that we cannot waste, since it may not be repeated”. Aoun has listed among the priorities “the return of the displaced in their villages”.
The Lebanese president also intervened to illustrate the internal political atmosphere in Lebanon with regard to the talks with Israel, obsteated by the Hezbollah movement, whose political wing sits in parliament. “The majority of political forces are aware of the delicacy of the phase and are firmly opposed to discords and everything that harms peace in the country,” said Aoun, continues the presidency’s note.
Aoun said: “I am in permanent contact with the presidents Nabih Berri (president of Parliament, head of the Shiite party Amal) and Nawaf Salam (premier), with the former MP (disuse) Walid Jumblatt and several Lebanese leaders to follow the communications I am leading to consolidate the ceasefire and provide the appropriate atmosphere that protects Lebanon, because the current phase requires realism, wisdom and rationality.
Concerning the negotiations with Israel, Aoun reiterated that he had chosen this option “because the experiences of the past taught us that wars only lead to killings, destruction and displacement.” “I knew there would be those who objected, doubted and made accusations, but I am confident that this option is the safest for Lebanon and the Lebanese, whatever their affiliation,” he continued. The ambassador of Lebanon in Washington, Nada Hammadah Muawwad, “will present Lebanon in the preparatory meeting scheduled tomorrow at the US State Department to raise the question of the extension of the term of the ceasefire and stop agreement by Israel to demolition operations in the villages and cities of the south. The orientation of Lebanon in the expected negotiations is clear: no concession and no bargaining except what realizes the Lebanese sovereignty and the interest of all Lebanese people,” he concluded.
