Lebanon, the UN: “We work to maintain presence even after the departure of Unifil”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The United Nations are “working” to maintain a presence in Lebanon after the departure of Unifil, whose mission will end in December. This was said by the UN Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix at a press conference in Geneva, cited by the Lebanese media. The Security Council requested “options for a possible presence of the United Nations after Unifil” and “we must submit these recommendations by 1 June this year,” he said.

The Unifil mission was born with Resolution 425 adopted on 19 March 1978 by the United Nations Security Council, following Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in March 1978, to ensure the withdrawal of Israeli troops and stabilize the region, allowing the Lebanese government to reaffirm its authority. Later resolutions extended the duration of the mission annually, including the well-known Resolution 1701 of 11 August 2006, which enshrined the cessation of hostilities after the 33-day war of the same year between the Israeli army and Hezbollah and the support of the Lebanese army to resume control of the territory. On 28 August 2025 the UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of Unifil until 31 December 2026, providing for a gradual withdrawal by the end of 2027.
