TRIPOLI (LIBIA) (ITALPRESS) – An Italian archaeological mission of the University of Macerata is continuing the restoration and maintenance work at the archaeological site of Sabratha, in western Libya, within the framework of the program of scientific and cultural cooperation with the Department of Libyan Antiquities. The Department has announced, in a press release, that a technical team of the Superintendency of the Antiquities of Sabratha is currently cleaning the mosaic of the Church of Justinian as a preliminary phase, before starting the operations of conservation and documentation, which will be subsequently realized using techniques of imaging with drones. The note adds that the work in progress also includes the inventory and classification, by the Italian mission, of the artefacts kept in the archaeological warehouses, in the context of joint efforts to improve the conservation of the heritage and support the scientific knowledge of the site.
This project is part of a series of initiatives aimed at preserving Libyan archaeological sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which are seeing a growing collaboration between Libyan authorities and international academic institutions. The archaeological site of Sabratha contains important Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine finds.
