London Heathrow Airport closed due to fire, more than 1,300 flights canceled

LONDON (UNITED KINGDOM) (ITALPRESS) — Due to a fire that broke out late last night in an electrical substation, London’s Heathrow Airport will be closed all day. The closure will affect at least 1,351 flights to and from London.

“We expect significant disruptions in the coming days and passengers should not go to the airport under any circumstances. Passengers should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until the airport reopens,” they let the airport know from the airport.

According to fire officials, the fire occurred at a substation in Hayes, a nearby town in the London Borough of Hillingdon, causing the power outage. As a precaution, about 150 people were evacuated.

Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest airport, handles more than 80 million passengers each year, and an average of 1,300 flights a day, including landings and takeoffs. At the time the closure was declared, there were 120 airliners flying to London’s main hub.
