Finally Milan Cortina will reach a historic milestone also in terms of gender balance: with 47% of athletes, will be the most gender balanced Winter Games ever.” Thus the president of Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026, Giovanni Malagò, on the Winter Games officially taken after the inaugural ceremony yesterday.
“Everything is ready but anyone who knows these organizations so complex knows that the problems are always around the corner and today the most difficult aspect for the Organizing Committee is to be prepared for any overtime – added the former number one of the Coni to ‘MF Milan Finance’ – I wish to thank the approximately 36 thousand people who have worked and are working in Milan Cortina among workers, hostesses, testimonials and foundation officials. It was a race against time and we do not forget that since the adventure began we have crossed four governments, with different interlocutors and more there were Covid and wars. In fact we have organized the Olympics in the last two and a half years with an impressive acceleration.”.
At the economic level, Malagò still assures, “there will be in the immediate formidable benefits for the country: there are studies of three universities that indicate values between 5.2 and 5.5 billion euros of added value and about 36,000 new employees.”.
With Milan-Cortina the ‘diffuse’ Olympics will become a custom: “The Winter Games of Milan Cortina 2026 are an innovative model: enhance different territories, reuse existing plants and involve larger communities. It is a project in line with the indications of Cio and with the evolution that the international Olympic movement considers necessary. The choice of distributing competitions between multiple locations allows to optimize resources, reduce environmental impact and highlight excellence already present on the territory. It offers Italy the opportunity to tell each other through multiple identities and cultures united in a single great narrative.”.
From the competitive point of view, Malagò admits that, “beyond the number of medals, what really counts is the quality of performance. I am convinced that our athletes will be able to give us extraordinary sports moments, expressing their talents at best. Milan Cortina 2026 will be the occasion to celebrate excellence and determination that always distinguish our sports movement. How many medals will Italy win? There is a mission to improve the formidable number of 17 medals obtained in Beijing 2022′′, Malagò concludes.
