ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “ Yesterday was an incredible day: Six medals in 24 hours at the Winter Olympics will remain in history. Unbelievable the multidisciplinary nature of the medals. We have become a country where we are able to be competitive in sports where we have never been. This is fundamental in the Olympic program and in the final medallion. We are third now, although the road is still very long. For quantity of medals we’d be overwhelmed. I have always been of the idea that the strength of a country is seen in how many different sports medals you can earn, not necessarily those of gold.” So Giovanni Malagò, president of the Fondazione Milano-Cortina 2026, guest of Radio Anch’io Sport on Rai Radio 1, on the historic day for blue sports, with six medals conquered (1 silver and 5 bronzes). Why are we capable and so good? “A question that makes me many colleagues around the world for a long time. I have three answers: on that human material we have we know to work particularly well. The professionalism of the Coni, of the first absolute level. And then we have trained technicians very well, with basic courses and structures on agonistic growth paths that make the difference”.
The Olympic Games of Milan-Cortina, which came into play, have had the merit of obscuring even football, the sport most followed par excellence: “I wasn’t surprised and I was happy that at the middle of the media scene there were Olympic events and football came later.” “Surely the world qualification will be a watershed. From there you can raise, you can return competitive. Since the post-war period, the history of our football is characterized by formidable results and complicated moments. Whoever’s dealing with football today, I think he figured out what the problems are. Even because, if you do not change attitude, the situation is no longer sustainable,” added Malagò.
“An impressive bran is the clarity of Federica, even in the statements. I complimented her. He proved to be objectively an outclass. Getting tenths in that context of mental complexity as well as physical honestly lets hope for SuperG and Giant.”.
“I am so happy with the final result that there is always to think how to improve.” So Giovanni Malagò, president of the Fondazione Milano-Cortina 2026, guest of Radio Anch’io Sport on Rai Radio 1 answers the question if he would do something different to the opening ceremony. “The first fortune was a wonderful evening, after 4-5 consecutive days of rain. I’ve been busy for days, for weeks to carry out a speech that had a goal: shake the consciences of the Italians and make them feel proud through the value of the five circles. I never felt so proud to be Italian.” Ceremony, the only one sins the vacuum of athletes in San Siro after the sign with the name of the country: “I saw, but the alternative was to focus delegations in one place. And this involved two aspects: who was in Livigno or Cortina had to travel the night and maybe then the next day had the races. And then we had to value the concept of the Olympics spread.”.
On infrastructure: “The Organizing Committee has nothing to do with these works. We have always been at the side of those who wanted it and who brought it forward,” he says about the infrastructures that will have to be completed. “In Rome in 1960, the airport Fiumicino, today considered the best airport in Europe, was completed well beyond the Olimpiade. I don’t want to give excuses, but two years of Covid and the wars have conditioned all this. The important thing is that they have been chanted and that they will improve the lives of citizens, not only sportsmen,” he concludes.
“It is always necessary to look forward, otherwise there is no improvement.” So Malagò answers the question if the games of Milan-Cortina have filled the disappointment for the failure of Rome 2024. “The wound is completely marginalized. But if one should look, the wound is there.”.
