ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Firefighter rescue activities continue in harsh regions affected by adverse weather conditions in recent days: over 2,000 operations have been carried out in the last 72 hours between Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily.
Major criticality in Calabria in the provinces of Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia, Reggio Calabria and especially in the surrounding area, carried out 521 interventions from 11 February. In the province of Cosenza the floods of the rivers Crati, Busento and Campagnano have caused serious floods; in Cassano allo Ionio the precautionary evacuation of about 500 people was arranged. Thanks to the use of the Drago 165 helicopter, 10 people were recovered and taken to Cosenza, including two children, while in Grisolia ten more people were rescued by river boats. Also in Lamezia Terme the staff has rescued two citizens following a landslide.
In Sicily the wave of bad weather fell on the provinces of Palermo, Messina, Catania and Trapani. Since February 12, 647 interventions have been completed, mainly focused on the removal of pericular trees and the safety of building elements damaged by wind gusts.
In Sardinia the rescue device has been upgraded to manage the emergency in the provinces of Sassari (video), Nuoro, Cagliari and Oristano. With 891 interventions from 11 February, the teams worked incessantly for the removal of obstacles and assistance to the population, before an improvement of the weather conditions recorded in the evening of yesterday.
