ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The decree establishing 6 SICs (Community Importation Sites) and 2 ZPS (Special Protection Zone) was published in the Official Journal, according to the Habitat and Bird Directives. It is eight sites beyond the limit of Italian territorial waters, but within the Ecological Protection Zone declared by Italy. The new Natura 2000 sites introduced by decree 269 of 1 September 2026 are: Banco di Santa Lucia, Complesso dei monti sottomarini Ulisse-Doria-Janua, Parte Nord del monte submarino delle Baronie, Complesso dei monti sottomarini Sisifo-Tiro-Enarete, Dorsale sottomarina di Paola, Tirreno centrale per tutela di Caretta caretta, Mare Sinis Iglesiente e Mare Nurra. Thanks to the establishment of these new sites of the Natura 2000 Network, the protected area in the Italian ecological protection zone (ZPE) reaches the European target with 31%.
“These new sites – explains the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto – enrich our heritage of biodiversity and strengthen in concrete way the action of protection of the high sea, approaching Italy towards the goal of 30% of protected areas by 2030 provided by the European Biodiversity Strategy.” The sites were established for the conservation of marine turtles, marine birds and deep habitats characterized by the presence of coralligen and gaseous emissions.
