Mase, protocol with Kenya in Berlin for green hydrogen and biofuels

ROME (ITALPRESS) – MASE Undersecretary Claudio Barbaro’s mission to the “Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue,” one of the world’s most important forums on global energy transition, ended today.

Organized by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event was attended by high-ranking government representatives, global industry leaders, scientists, leaders of international organizations and NGOs, i.e., key decision makers in the energy transition.

“It was an important occasion during which we signed a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of Kenya, which represents an important step forward in cooperation between the two countries, laying the groundwork for the implementation of numerous joint initiatives and projects. Key elements of the agreement focus on promoting the energy transition through technology transfer and training in renewables, with a focus on green hydrogen and sustainable biofuels,” says Claudio Barbaro, undersecretary for Environment and Energy Security.

“Kenya is recognized as a potential key player thanks to its sustainable energy mix, and Italy, a global leader in geothermal energy, thus aims to strengthen its collaboration with the African country by expanding its green business and contributing to the country’s energy security,” he continues. “In addition, Kenya has a priority role for Italy, as evidenced by its inclusion among the priority countries for Italian cooperation in the three-year period 2024-2026 and among the pilot countries of the Mattei Plan for Africa. Another key point of the agreement is based on encouraging the production of biofuels from waste, avoiding negative impacts on ecosystems, agriculture and livestock. Italy is thus committed to creating employment and social value in Kenya, while respecting environmental criteria.”

Also today, the undersecretary spoke on the panel “Green Hydrogen – Ramping Up Infrastructure,” reporting on the “National Hydrogen Strategy” that Italy adopted last November, and the mission concluded with a bilateral meeting with Stephan Wenzel German Federal Undersecretary for Economics and Climate Protection, with whom the issues of the implementation of the EU Methane Regulation, the Southern Corridor Hydrogen Regulation, and the EU Action Plan on Affordable Energy were discussed.
