ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The attack on Iran “was predictable, there is no such imposing force in a region and then does not use it.” It is the opinion of Ambassador Giampiero Massolo, former secretary general of the Farnesina, interviewed by the Italpress agency.
“This force had two goals, one obviously to bring an attack and that to prevent or try to minimize the reaction. And it could be imagined that the negotiations would not go to a good end, because through the negotiating tool it was basically persecuted a surrender of the regime”, Massolo explained, according to which “the regime of the Ayatollahs in fact operated a strategic choice upstream, that is, he preferred to expose himself to the joint American and Israeli attack rather than to arrive to a negotiated solution”.
The attack basically has two objectives according to the diplomat: the first is to “demantly dismantle” the ability to enrich uranium by Iran. “The request was from the beginning not only to stop enriching, but also to eliminate capacity and export to a third country as already produced, and this was not welcomed,” Massolo said. The second objective is to deprive Iran “of its last instrument of deterrence, i.e. ballistic missiles”.
Finally, there is a third element: “Iran is now very weak, as we know its proxies are very weakened, the population has never been so contrary to the regime. Regional partners are also very weakened, China and Russia have other things to think about, they will certainly not come to help. So, the idea is that this additional dish can then lead to a revival of the events and give a shoulder to the regime,” Massolo explained.
“Evidently it is not certain that this happens, but it could be an effect somehow ‘persed in a secondary way’ by this action,” he continued. As for the most complex consequences, for the diplomat the “American compromise” is that at this time in the region, “between weakened powers and unfolded military ability to try to minimize Iranian reactions”, there are no chain reactions or any reactions that make management impossible and widen the conflict to dismiss. “This is the bet, we will see: it is still early to say evidently,” Massolo concluded.
