Mattarella in Hiroshima “Never again a nuclear holocaust”

HIROSHIMA (JAPAN) (ITALPRESS) – “Professor Terumi Tanaka in receiving the Nobel Prize evoked with extraordinary accuracy the devastation of Nagasaki. He retraced in moving words and with effective lucidity the events that marked his life and the lives of millions. He recalled the roar of the explosion, the blinding light that turned reality into a nightmare, the surreal silence that followed. He highlighted the physical suffering and trauma that marked people indelibly.” This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, as he met with the “hibakusha,” the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

“It was not just a reenactment of the pain of the past, of the ordeal of the people’s illnesses, of the torments suffered by the survivors of the atomic bombings of August 6 and 9, 1945,” Mattarella stressed. “The commitment of your Association for Peace and Against the Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons has always expressed a heartfelt plea for the future: that no other people, no other country should ever face a similar tragedy. Never again!” For the head of state, the “atomic tragedy” has left “indelible scars” on the affected populations and on the “collective consciousness of the world.”
