Mattarella “Italy defends international humanitarian law”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Nov. 4 celebrates national unity and honors the Armed Forces, whose achievements helped make Italy an independent, free nation inspired by democratic values and peace. A date that evokes distant events, wars and bloody fighting that brought devastation and wounds to the society of the time.” This was written by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to Defense Minister Guido Crosetto. “Today, the Republic looks with respect and devotion to the path that, from the Risorgimento to World War I, to the Liberation, to the choice of European and Atlantic solidarity, has been able to build a cohesive, united country, bearer of values of peace in the international community,” the head of state adds. The Italian Army, Navy, Air Force, Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are today placed in defense of the freedoms of Italian society, of the institutions desired by the sovereign people to protect the rights of each citizen, operating, on the national territory, in competition with the Police forces.””An onerous task, in an international context dense with tensions that have been exacerbated after the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine’s independence,” Mattarella continued. “Our Armed Forces continue to operate in distant lands in numerous missions, underscoring with their commitment our country’s vocation to cultivate and preserve respect for international law. A special thought goes to our military personnel deployed in the Middle East where, by mandate of the United Nations and within the framework of bilateral missions, they continue to ensure their contribution to peacekeeping, alleviating the suffering of the defenseless population in a dramatic humanitarian situation, promoting respect for international humanitarian law. On this day, the most grateful and moved thoughts go to those who have fallen, sacrificing their lives for Italy. Their memory sounds an exhortation to the civil conscience of the country, especially to the younger generations, so that they may know how to walk the path of commitment to the defense of the values of the Constitution,” the president of the Republic concluded. “Soldiers, sailors, airmen, carabinieri, financiers and civilian Defense personnel, your service to the Republic, to which you have sworn allegiance, deserves the applause and gratitude of our fellow citizens. Long live the Armed Forces, long live Italy.”
