Mattarella “L’Onu perno irrinunciabile dell’ordine internazionale”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Seven years ago, on December 14, 1955, the Italian Republic was welcomed to the United Nations, the most important among modern international organizations, built on the rubble of the Second World War with the declared aim of ‘saving future generations from the scourge of war”. Thus, in the anniversary celebration, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, adds: “It was necessary to wait ten years from the end of the war to achieve this result, made possible by the wisdom of the Constituent Fathers who, in drawing up Article 11 of our fundamental charter, gave dignity of constitutional value to multilateral cooperation, allowing, in conditions of equality with the other States, the limits of sovereignty necessary to an order that assures peace and justice among the Nazis. Since then, Italy has played responsibly its role as an active member of the international community, making participation in the United Nations a leader in its foreign policy, as well as European integration and the Atlantic Alliance. Italy hosts important offices and structures of UN agencies on its territory, participates in the operations of the ‘Blu helmets for the maintenance of peace and makes itself an interpreter of fundamental universal campaigns of civilization, beginning with the moratorium on the death penalty. In the 70th anniversary of accession, Italy salutes in the United Nations the irrelevant pin of an international order based on respect for law and authoritative multilateral institutions. Today, as then, it is up to the Member States to be responsible for making them effective and capable of achieving their high goals, for the benefit of every human being. The commitment of all will enable them to assert themselves as a shared heritage of all humanity,” the Head of State concludes.
