Mattarella “Marzabotto no longer separates Germans and Italians, it unites them”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We are here to remember, because memory calls forth responsibility. In World War II the bottom of the abyss was touched. The barbarity, the erasure of all human dignity. Italy, Germany and Europe were able to rise from that hell, building freedom, peace, democracy, rights, community, a new security.” Thus the president of the Repubblioca, Sergio Mattarella, in his speech on the 80th anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre. “President Steinmeier,
I would like to thank you. The Italian Republic thanks you for being here, together with our fellow citizens, with the families of the victims, to share an anniversary so full of historical and civil significance,” he added. “Today, your presence, dear President Steinmeier, is a further incentive to move forward together in building the future. On this day, in the presence of President Steinmeier, we can affirm, in the words spoken by President Rau in 2002, that Marzabotto has become a place that no longer separates Germans and Italians but unites them,” the head of state stressed.
“Marzabotto and Monte Sole are cornerstones of the Italian Republic. Eighty years after those tragic days, today we feel more clearly that Marzabotto and Monte Sole are symbols and foundations of the whole of Europe, proof of our common destiny that, together, in recent days, in Berlin as in Bonn and Cologne, we have confirmed that we want to choose. That of a Europe that does not give up, and indeed wants to develop its values, its civilization, its law, based on the primacy of the person,” the president of the Republic concluded.
