Mattarella “No more inequality, work needs women”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Work is an engine of social and economic growth: our country, like others, cannot afford to forego the contribution of women, who are an indispensable factor. The nearly 20 percent gap between male and female employment is a critical point in the system: every effort must be made to reduce it more and more. Work is also freedom, dignity and redemption. In labor relations, the rights of equality and parity, provided for in our Constitution, must be respected. Even today in women’s work there are obstacles, slowdowns and inequalities, for access, in pay, in career progression, in top positions.” Thus the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in the message sent to “Women’s Time,” the traditional appointment of Il Corriere della Sera, dedicated to the female universe, published in the Sunday edition of the newspaper. “Barriers can rise to the point of unacceptable and hateful discrimination: dismissals, blank resignations, undue pressure, even forms of stalking and violence, physical or psychological. Respect for norms and rights must also be ensured through firm and effective supervision. Likewise, obstacles make it difficult to reconcile employment and family care must be removed. Work does not distance women from motherhood. The opposite is true: women’s employment is a factor that decisively supports families and births. In an effort to curb demographic impoverishment – but also to meet the legitimate desires of young couples – it will be increasingly necessary to strive for better management of services, reconciliation of work time, and a stronger culture of family support,” Mattarella concludes.
