Mattarella “Pope’s voice more necessary than ever”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Your Holiness, it is with feelings of special, affectionate closeness that I am directed to you to extend to you my best wishes on the happy occasion of the solemn beginning of the Pontificate. Together with me, the Italian people are grateful to you for these twelve years in which you have offered the most authentic witness to Gospel values, in constant service not only to the Catholic Church but to all humanity.” Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a message sent to His Holiness Pope Francis.

“I wish to recall the unprecedented insights that your high magisterium has placed at the center of the debate in important multilateral fora. At the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, at the G7 Summit presided over by Italy, at the G20, your Holiness brought a vibrant call to the rediscovery of hope, to the setting aside of logics of force and prevarication, to those instances of renewal disclosed by an ethical use of new technologies. While at the international level the reasons for law and a proper articulation of coexistence among states seem to be fading, his voice is and remains more necessary than ever,” the president of the Republic stressed. “In this spirit, Holy Father, I renew to you sincere good wishes for every well-being in the continuation of the Pontificate to which I add those – all the more heartfelt – of a speedy recovery,” the head of state concluded.
