ROME (ITALPRESS) – “On the 20th anniversary of the killing of Nicola Calipari, the Republic honors the sacrifice of a valiant executive of the Military Intelligence and Security Service, who lost his life in a difficult mission in Baghdad that ended with the rescue of a kidnapped Italian woman. This is a day of remembrance and recollection, on which I wish to express first and foremost the most intense feelings of closeness to the family and to those who worked with Calipari and were close to him. Servant of the State, when he was shot dead, he was carrying journalist Giuliana Sgrena to safety, in what was yet another accomplished mission to rescue compatriots.” This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the death of Nicola Calipari.
“If the explanations of the circumstances that caused his death still remain incomplete, what stands out, on the other hand, is the extreme generosity of Calipari, who shielded the discharge of bullets with his own body to remove the person he had managed to free from the risk,” Mattarella added. “A gesture of heroism, inscribed in the history of the Republic.
