Mattarella “Solidarity and civic engagement are oxygen for society”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The Knights of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic are examples of “solidarity, sense of humanity, involvement in taking charge of other people’s difficulties. And it is right to make them known.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the awarding of OMRI honors conferred “motu proprio” to citizens who have distinguished themselves for acts of civic commitment. “They are not awards to heroes. The honored persons live in normal everyday life. This is the merit of their behavior. They express the sense of community,” stressed the head of state, who added, “So many other people are inspired by these values. You here represent them all. For society, these actions and initiatives are oxygen.” Moreover, “your behaviors are the negation of loneliness. We are inundated with messages and images, but loneliness is a very high danger; in this mass of information flows, relationships that are only apparent can be disorienting,” the president explained. Choosing instead of indifference “commitment to those in need makes social life better. You are an important asset. Thank you for what you have done,” Mattarella concluded.
