ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “It closes a year not easy. We all have the reasons and, as always, we hope to meet a better time. Our expectation is first and foremost addressed to peace.” It is one of the passages of the end-of-year speech of the president of Repubbolica Sergio Mattarella.
In his speech Mattarella also spoke of young people, the role of the EU and the United Nations, the need to reject violence and hatred, the eighty years of the Italian Republic and its international role.
“In the face of homes, homes devastated by bombings in Ukrainian cities, in the face of the destruction of power plants to leave children, elderly people, women, men to the cold of the cold winter of those territories, in the face of the devastation of Gaza, where newborns to the cold die unwanted, the desire for peace is increasingly higher and becomes more incomprehensible and repugnant the refusal of those who deny it because they feel stronger”.
“Peace, in reality, is a way of thinking – he emphasized -: that of living together with others, respecting them, without claiming to impose their own will, their own interests, their own domain. The way of thinking, the mentality, start from everyday life. They concern any area: the international one, the one within individual states, each community, small or large. For every people begins from their national dimension.”.
And again: “Leon XIV – to whom I address the most affectionate wishes of the Italian people – on Christmas days, near the conclusion of the Jubilee of Hope, urged to ‘resping hatred, violence, opposition and practicing dialogue, peace and reconciliation’. He recalled the need to disarm words. We collect this invitation. If every circumstance becomes a pretext for violent verbal clashes, for reciprocal accusations, of which the foundation does not count but only the polemical force, there is no expression of a mentality of peace, there is no building of the foundation. In the face of the question: “What can I do?” we must remove the fatalistic sense of impotence that risks oppressing each one. The affirmation of freedom, the construction of peace are in the founding act of our Republic, which expresses the desire to realize the future together, through dialogue. It represents the responsibility of being citizens.”.
Then a memory of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, “two faces we cannot forget”.
And still the need to protect the conquests of state welfare and fight old and new poverty.
