ROME (ITALPRESS) – “March 21 represents a solemn day of remembrance and civil commitment to affirm values essential to the health of our community. The daily commitment to the practice of legality, the fight against all mafias, against criminal syndicates that generate violence and oppression, against gray areas of complicity that favor their business and spread, sees the work of all citizens who wish to live in a cohesive society that respects the rights of all.” Thus the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the National Day of Memory and Commitment in Remembrance of the Victims of the Mafia.
“It marks 30 years since Libera and other associations embarked on an important path of awareness-raising and civil mobilization to the point where a state law established the ‘National Day of Memory and Commitment in Remembrance of the Victims of the Mafia,’ to express dutiful solidarity with the innocent victims killed by the mafia hand,” the head of state added.
“Every sphere has been affected by this scourge: servants of the Republic, women and men who fought to improve society, entrepreneurs and citizens who rejected the blackmail of crime, simple people who ended up under the gun of murderers. Their names are part of our collective memory, and it is to them that we renew, first and foremost, our commitment to fight the mafias, starting from the institutions to the places of daily life, overcoming resignation and indifference, allies of the violent and overpowering. The mafia can be defeated. It depends on us: so many shining examples confirm this to us,” Mattarella concluded.
