TEL AVIV (ISRAELE) (ITALPRESS) – The British ambassador to Israel, Simon Walters, “has communicated to the Israeli authorities” that, if the decision of foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem, London would react by expelling 27 Israeli diplomats from the embassy in London. The Israeli Ynet site writes it, specifying that it has obtained a copy of the letter. The deterioration of the relations between London and Tel Aviv has reached its peak with the British decision taken last month to impose economic sanctions on the settlements in the West Bank. Following this decision in London, Sa’ar announced the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem and the revocation of the diplomatic credentials of his staff. The entry into force of the measure is scheduled for Thursday, 8 October. Tens of local consulate employees have already been fired and British diplomats are preparing to leave.
Among the other measures taken by Sa’ar last month include the removal of British representatives from the coordination centre of international aid for Gaza, located in the southern city of Kiryat Gat, the cessation of British involvement in the training of security forces of the Palestinian National Authority in the West Bank and the prohibition of entry into Israel to 12 elected officials and other British citizens.
