Mef “No increase for fuel excise taxes”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Completely misleading is the news that the Government intends to increase excise taxes on fuels. Based on the PNRR commitments, the European Commission’s Specific Recommendations and the Green Transition Plan approved in March 2022, the Government is required to take measures to reduce harmful environmental subsidies (Sad).” So says a note from the Mef. “In this context, the lower excise taxes on diesel fuel compared to those on gasoline also fall within the scope, and therefore a mechanism for aligning the levels of the respective excise taxes is being studied,” the Ministry of Economy and Finance explains. In any case, in keeping with this government’s approach, the intervention will not result in the simplistic choice of raising excise taxes on diesel to the level of those on gasoline, but rather in a reshaping of the two. The Medium-Term Budgetary Structural Plan has provided that this alignment will be defined as part of the measures implementing the tax delegation.”
