Meloni “Cohesive majority, premierate needed for more solid Italy”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Exactly today our Government enters the list of the 5 longest lasting in the history of the Italian Republic. In 79 years of republican history, just think, Italy has had as many as 68 governments, we are today in fifth place in terms of duration. It means, in practice, that we have moved up 63 positions in about 127 weeks of government.” Thus Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a video on X.

“It is an achievement that I want to share with you,” Meloni added, “first of all to thank the many citizens who continue to support us and give us the strength to move forward with determination, and because after two and a half years we still have the consent of the majority of citizens, which is not taken for granted, and the majority is still cohesive, which is still perhaps even less taken for granted.

“The room in which I stand here at Palazzo Chigi and which I have shown you before collects images of all the Prime Ministers of Italy. Some of those you see here behind me are the one who had the honor of leading this nation during republican Italy,” the premier stressed. “Very few of these men stayed in government for more than two years. None of them reached the end of the legislature with the same government. It means that in Italy governments have succeeded each other without in most cases having the time to forward any defined or concrete strategy, and Italy has paid for it, because stability is essential to give the nation a vision, an authority, an international centrality, a policy that builds for the future instead of just grabbing easy consensus in the present. That’s why the premierate reform, which in the meantime is proceeding in Parliament, I consider it fundamental for Italy.”

For Meloni, this is a fundamental reform “because it does two essential things: it gives back to citizens the full power to choose who they want to be governed by, and it ensures that those who are chosen have the time they need to carry out the mandate they have received.”
“In this way it will finally be possible to give continuity to long-term strategies and build a stronger, more authoritative, more competitive Italy,” the premier continued. “It is not a reform that we are doing for this government, we are doing it for governments to come, because a more solid Italy needs stable institutions and governments that can work with the time and strength necessary to give concrete answers to the nation. In the meantime, we will go forward with seriousness and determination because that is what the Italians are asking of us and, above all, that is what the Italians deserve. And thank you all for your trust and support.”
