ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In the context of continuous contacts with the leaders of the region, the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, had this evening a telephone interview with the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Palazzo Chigi, underlined in a note that during the conversation the two leaders expressed support for the ongoing negotiating process for a lasting exit from the crisis that guarantees a regional security framework and leads to the sustainable reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. It was also reiterated the importance of reaching an agreement on the issue of Iranian nuclear power, which was necessary for a regional balance.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Lebanon, stressing the need for immediate ceasefire and sharing support for the prospect of direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon. President Meloni and President Al-Sisi also analysed the heavy fallout of the crisis on the securitarian and humanitarian level. In particular, President Meloni highlighted how a persistent instability in the Gulf and Middle East is likely to act as a multiplier of socio-economic fragility, even with potential migration emergencies towards the Mediterranean coasts. In this regard, the two leaders renewed their commitment to consolidate the bilateral partnership aimed at managing migration flows and closer cooperation in contrast to human traffickers.
