Meloni “Mediterranean increasingly global”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “As a country at the center of the Mediterranean, Italy knows it has a great responsibility: this government has shown that it wants to play its part in global dynamics, particularly with regard to opportunities related to the development of economic interconnections.” So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during the 10th edition of the Rome Med Dialogues. “I am thinking for example of the development of Imec, which aims to connect Europe with India,” Meloni continued. “Connecting the port cities of the Middle East and our continent, including Italy with Trieste on the map, would allow us to unleash an enormous potential for our economy and our trade. Conceiving the Mediterranean as a global space becomes an extraordinary opportunity for everyone also from the energy point of view: we have already nominated Italy to become the main hub to connect energy flows between Africa and Europe, energy connections are one of the pillars of the Mattei Plan with which we aim to become the European gateway for Mediterranean gas and hydrogen.””We want to build an increasingly secure and stable geopolitical space with a view to equal cooperation, not predatory or charitable,” Meloni stressed: our challenge is to enable African nations to make the best use of their resources and live with stable governments and prosperous societies. “Until now, the right not to have to emigrate has not been guaranteed,” she continued. “We need to give these people a way to have a future of dignity, growth, work and opportunity: true solidarity and respect can only be achieved in this way and this is what we have been working on since we took office. We are trying to Europeanize the Mattei Plan in order to create synergies between different instruments working with the same objective: at our instigation Von der Leyen decided to introduce in the new European Commission a portfolio dedicated to the Mediterranean and to work on the writing of a plan for the Mediterranean, an initiative we look at with great attention and towards which we are ready to provide full cooperation. This scenario demonstrates a change of posture toward the southern flank on the part of Europe in recent years, and this is due to the Italian impulse: this change of posture can be seen particularly in the way migratory flows are governed, as evidenced by the support for the memoranda with Tunisia and Egypt. The commitment is on the one hand to create development, and on the other to fight the networks of traffickers: it is a path that needs to be consolidated in order to fight illegal immigration with increasing incisiveness.”
