ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “When we complain that Americans want to reduce their presence, and therefore their influence in Europe, what exactly are we saying? What do we want to continue to give them our responsibilities as sovereign nations? And does it not find that it is a paradox that just those who are continually polemical about the relations with the United States, who strangle their garments for a presence of U.S. security forces during the Olympics, as always happens in these events with the different Allied countries, then ask the United States to continue to deal with our defense?”. Thus, in an interview with the Director of Il Foglio, Claudio Cerasa, the President of the Council Giorgia Meloni, stressing the importance of the role of the U.S. for the future of Europe.
“I think this confusion is one of our main problems – he adds. After that I have always defended, in the relationship with the United States, the unity of the West. I am convinced that only a strong and cohesive West can face the global challenges of this era, and this applies both to Europeans and to Americans.”.
“For a long time – the Premier emphasizes – Europe has given up its security and, over time, it has even come to think that there was no external danger from which to defend itself. It is no coincidence, in fact, that much of the Italian and European left, still today in the context in which we find ourselves, the argument that security and defence costs are useless. Unfortunately, reality is very different from what the left wants. We live in a time when instability and uncertainty became normal, and it is our duty to act accordingly.”.
“It would be existential, for our peoples and for our democracies to hide the head under the sand and think that the problem does not exist,” adds Meloni, who says about Ukraine: “I am convinced that freedom that is defended in Kiev is not only the freedom of the Ukrainian people, but also ours. It is the reason why Italy continues to do its part from every point of view, not least through the supply of energy supply systems to face winter and counter the Russian attempt to bend the Ukrainian people with darkness and frost”.
