Meloni “Working on tariffs to avert a trade war”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The issue of tariffs and trade relations with the U.S. is not on the agenda, but it is a point to consider for an exporting nation like Italy. The Trump administration has decided to reactivate duties on steel and aluminum, the U.S. has announced the possibility of activating further duties on other sectors. The Commission has responded by announcing rebalancing countermeasures. The picture is complex, but I am convinced that we must continue to work to find common ground and avert a trade war that benefits no one, neither the U.S. nor Europe.” So said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni during communications in the Senate ahead of the March 20-21 European Council.

“It is unwise to fall into the temptation of retaliation that becomes a vicious circle where everyone loses,” Meloni continued. “While it is true that tariffs can favor domestic production, they can result in induced inflation and raising rates from the ECB. I am not sure,” she said, “that it is good business to respond to duties with more duties, so I think Italy’s energies should be spent on common-sense solutions in a logic of mutual respect and economic convenience.
