Melons “As regards migration, Italy is playing a very important and proactive role within the Council of Europe”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “I am very pleased that, after significantly strengthening the external dimension of EU migration policies, having started a fruitful debate on innovative solutions and having placed migration at the heart of our G7 Presidency, Italy is now playing a very important and proactive role in migration and security within the Council of Europe. Today, 27 Nations – representing the majority of the member states of the Council of Europe – joined the joint declaration promoted by Italy and Denmark on the need to update the application of the European Convention on Human Rights to the complex world today. This approach will allow us to ensure that the security of our citizens, which is an absolute priority for our governments, is adequately protected and is not subordinate to interpretations of the law that could end up rewarding individuals who have committed serious violations.” Thus, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on the Conference of Justice Ministers of the Council of Europe during which 27 member countries of the Council of Europe approved a joint declaration on the European Convention on Human Rights.

Denmark and Italy are determined to continue to play a leading role in effective migration management. For its part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said: “We must ensure that foreigners convicted of serious crimes can be expelled. Unfortunately, there is a number of foreign criminals that we cannot expel because of the interpretation of the European Convention on Human Rights. This makes it necessary to adjust the balance between the relevant public interests of defending freedom and security in our societies and the individual rights of foreign criminals. I am very pleased that a majority of countries in the Council of Europe now want to cooperate in this initiative. It is an important step that emphasizes the need to increase the sense of security of our peoples.”.

The debate will now continue in collaboration with the Council of Europe, with the aim of adopting a statement at the meeting of foreign ministers to be held on 15 May 2026 in Chisinau, Moldova.
