Michelin rewards 67 fleets with Pneumatic Sustainable Management Certificate

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – A tire can have up to six lives. It is the message at the centre of the press conference with which Michelin Italiana presented in Milan the fifth edition of the Certificate for Sustainable Management of Pneumatics, an initiative that rewards transport companies engaged in a model of use “multi vita” of tyres. The environmental results are significant. The fleets that have adopted the model in the last year have allowed a saving of 8,228 tons of CO2, equivalent to the annual emissions of about 6,000 cars, and of 2,904 tons of raw materials, equal to those necessary to produce about 41,500 new tyres for truck. In addition to the environmental impact, significant economic benefits emerge. The model “multi vita” allows a reduction of the cost of about 33%, with savings that can reach up to 40% regarding the purchase of new tires. In practice, the tire is first collected and subsequently rebuilt, up to a total of six life cycles. Each resculpture operation allows to increase the kilometer journey by 25%. A process that, underlines the company, does not compromise security. Each carcass is subjected to 86 pre and post-intervention phases and, according to Michelin data, the rate of incidentality is even decreasing. A budget that confirms the effectiveness of virtuous practices in the management of vehicle parks. For the fifth consecutive year, Michelin has renewed the Certificate, assigning it to 67 companies, almost twice as much as last year, for a total circular park that exceeds 23,000 vehicles. To obtain the Pneumatic Sustainable Management Certificate, transport companies must comply with a minimum threshold of 30% of reconstructed tyres and 10% of tyres affected by the total tyres mounted on the actual circulating park. The initiative is aimed at the fleets of goods and persons, in addition to the means used in the quarry-cantiere sectors. “ The Certificate for Sustainable Management of Pneumatics represents a shared path of environmental responsibility and economic sustainability between Michelin and the companies of the Italian road haulage”, said Silvia Vergani, marketing director of Michelin Italiana. “The record number of award-winning fleets confirms that sustainability is a concrete leverage of competitiveness for the sector.” Vergani also underlined how each reconstructed tire saves about 50 kg of raw materials and how re-sculpture operations also contribute to reducing fuel consumption. The fifth edition of the Certificate coincides with the 120 years of Michelin’s presence in Italy, the first country, after France, in which the group settled in 1906. An anniversary that, explains the company, is not only a historical event, but reiterates the strategic role of Italy within the group. Michelin has a potential production capacity of about 14 million tires per year and is the main employer of the sector, with over 3,800 employees distributed in the three Piedmontese plants of Turin, Alessandria and Cuneo, as well as the Milan commercial headquarters.
