Middle East, Tajani “Agreements disregarded and I expect an apology”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “It is unacceptable what has happened to damage some Unifil positions in South Lebanon, it is unacceptable that by mistake or even worse intentionally Unifil bases are hit. For a couple of weeks the Italian government has been warning the Israeli government of this danger: I myself have called my Israeli colleague Israel Katz three times in the last few days. And then, since we have established a very close relationship for years, I called President Herzog twice.” Thus Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Corriere della Sera, returns to the scenario in the Middle East.
“Israel can defend itself militarily, it has every right to respond to the barbaric assault of October 7. But its operations must at all times respect international law, civilians and in this case the UN contingents. They always replied to me that they fully understood our messages, that they would ensure our guidance to those operating on the ground,” Tajani continued. “Unfortunately, I see that the results are different from what we were guaranteed. I hope that now an apology and condemnation for what happened will come from Israel. Good that the Israeli embassy has announced the opening of an investigation.”
“The Italians are acting as true peacekeepers,” Tajani continued, “We are following them like children, asking for minute-by-minute updates. We are doing everything in our power to ensure the integrity of these boys but the mission must go on to ensure peace and prevent the situation from degenerating.”
