ROME (ITALPRESS) – “There is still a chance to avert a global crisis involving the Middle East. We can, we want to and we must succeed. It is a difficult path, but it is one that we can achieve if everyone puts their best effort and the parties involved know how to be responsible. We must never give up on the diplomatic route, which is the only one that can lead to concrete results and avert a spiral of violence and instability that has already lasted far too long. We and our allies are there.” Thus Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Qn Group newspapers.
“Israel has the right to defend itself, but we must be careful that the situation does not get out of hand. Gaza and Lebanon are closely linked. And so we say strongly that we need a ceasefire in Lebanon as we needed and need it in Gaza,” he adds. “We appeal to everyone for common sense to prevail. We must avert escalation. It is a very critical, complex situation to which a solution must be found,” the minister explains, emphasizing how “diplomatic efforts are constant. At such a difficult time we are also working to protect the safety of our military. Israel has assured us the utmost care not to involve them.” But does Unifil’s presence still make sense? “The one on Unifil is a decision to be made by the United Nations. Minister Crosetto has written several times for assurances about our military. Theoretically, theirs can potentially still be a very useful role. But let’s see how the situation evolves.” According to Tajani, “we have long and very clearly said that the only option to achieve peace is the ‘two peoples, two states’ option.”
