ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We believe that having established by primary rule the list of ‘Safe Countries’ can contribute to greater enforcement certainty of important procedures.” So said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi in an interview with Corriere della Sera, stressing that “the new regulations, which could come into force before June 2026, will make accelerated procedures at the border mandatory and will provide much more direct criteria for qualifying ‘Safe Countries’ by linking them to the number of asylum applications accepted throughout the European Union. The entry into force of these rules will certainly strengthen our ability to counter human trafficking without restricting the right to asylum in any way.” As for the clash between the government and the judiciary, according to Piantedosi, “I don’t think we can say that there have been attacks by the government. While it may be legitimate and understandable that magistrates freely express their opinions, especially in the context of associative activity, I believe that similar prerogative cannot be denied to politics, which, by definition, is characterized by freedom of expression. As far as I am concerned, as minister of the interior, I consider it important that any possible objection to the contents of judicial acts be made through appeals.”
On the Ecri report, the minister notes that “it is unbelievable that an international organization that is supposed to protect human rights, promote European cultural identity and the search for solutions to social problems in Europe can make such claims, which are completely without foundation. Our police forces are appreciated in Italy and around the world as bastions of democracy, defense of the weakest and proximity to the everyday problems of citizens.”
