MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Today (March 6) marks the European Day of Speech Therapy, promoted by the Technical-Scientific Association Federazione Logopedisti Italiani (FLI) in the international context of the European Speech and Language Therapy Association (ESLA). On the occasion of this anniversary, the Commission d’Albo Logopedisti of the Order of Medical Radiology Health Technicians and Technical, Rehabilitation and Prevention Health Professions (TSRM and PSTRP) of Milan, Como, Lecco, Lodi, Monza Brianza and Sondrio recalls the slogan chosen for 2025: “Language and environment, together they win.”
The European Day, in fact, provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on how language and the environment can affect each other and how the intervention of the Speech Therapist is essential to improve communication and the quality of people’s lives. “The dialogue between the Professional Order and the Technical Scientific Association is essential to promote and disseminate good practices and to ensure the high standards of professionalism and competence of the Speech Therapist,” says Order President Diego Catania. “Anniversaries such as today’s are an opportunity to reflect together on the growth horizons of the Profession, to which the Institution and the Association, with different tools and roles, contribute in synergy.”
“This year’s theme invites us to explore the importance of an environment conducive to communication and language,” comments the President of the Milan Board of Speech Therapists, Alessia Zanini. “The Speech Therapist has always been committed to the provision of stimulating, inclusive and accessible contexts so that the care of the Person, at the heart of the recently approved Code of Ethics, is fully realized.”
The role of speech therapy in creating a favorable communicative environment is articulated in different ways according to life stages. In the field of developmental age, the Speech Therapist monitors the proper development of language in children, intervening early in case of difficulties: in this case, an environment rich in stimuli, with targeted activities and adequate communication and relationship with families, is essential to foster learning and integration of the youngest children.
In the treatment of adult patients, on the other hand, the role of this Health Professional is crucial in the rehabilitation of language and communication following trauma, illness, or age-related disorders, such as post-stroke aphasia or speech disabilities. In this view, an environment that promotes communication is an incentive for the recovery and improvement of language skills, creating a context that stimulates autonomy and social participation.
In the geriatric setting, where language and communication can be impaired by neurodegenerative diseases such as, for example, Alzheimer’s disease, the role of the Speech Therapist is essential to maintain and enhance language and interpersonal skills: here, too, an environment that respects and fosters social interaction is crucial to improving the quality of life of the elderly, warding off isolation. “The Speech Therapist is committed to raising awareness among institutions, schools, families and the community about the value of an inclusive communicative environment that respects diversity and ensures equal opportunities for all,” Zanini concludes. “Barrier-free language is a right, and only by implementing policies and spaces that promote accessibility and communication can we ensure the well-being of everyone at every stage of life.”
