Moggi “Series A pass championship, Marotta best manager for detachment”

MILANO (ITALPRESS) – “Everyone says that today’s football has changed, but the reality is that the players’ feet have changed: in Italy before we had foreign tops, now come only those who want to learn to play football and just learned if they go to Premier League”: to say the former manager of Juventus, Rome, Naples, Lazio and Turin, Luciano Moggi, today sports opinionist, interviewed by Marco Klinger for Medicine. Moggi’s attention moves from the field to the desk, outlining the executive figures that are doing better at present: “The physical structure is essential, but it is not enough: the leaders should also speak. Today it is Inter to have the best ones, Marotta and Ausilio can give lessons to all: Inter is in the first places of the ranking every year and fight for something, including the Champions League; it is difficult to get there, but every year it is precisely Inter to represent Italy. In terms of programming Juventus buys Openda for 40 million euros, Inter buys Bonny for 24: this tells us something about the difference between the executives because Bonny is young and good, Openda is practically at the end of the career. I think Marotta is the best manager for detachment: the difficult aspect in a football company is to have a man who knows how to combine sport with the economy, something Marotta knows how to do; also he surrounds himself with capable people, with whom he is good at teaming”.

The former executive then focuses on the relationship maintained with doctors during his career: “I always had a close collaboration with them: when there was some muscle injury I often sent one or two doctors to see the team’s workouts to see how the players were running. For me prevention was fundamental: not everyone is able to cure, because muscle injuries are something quite bad and can be relapsed, but in my management activity I have always tried to prevent and managed to overcome certain dramas.” Speaking of champions of the past and present, Moggi’s favourite is “seriously Maradona: today we talk about Messi and Ronaldo, but he was part of another category. There are outclasses and samples: Maradona was an outclass, the others were champions. Naples put Maradona in a position to make a certain life: in the day he could not turn around the city, because at every piè sospinto were photographs and autographs, so he had to move necessarily at night. On his way of acting there were also some things I discovered and then eliminated: he went to the hotels from 2 onwards, then in the morning he went home and slept, so he could not train. If he had done the athlete’s life he could still play for fifty years, not having done it had to stop for obvious reasons: the substance however is that he was a player able to win the matches alone and the symbol of the team, one to which everyone loved”.

Moggi traces his recipe in choosing a player to buy: everything depends on “the characteristics of the team: if missing an attacker I would choose Lautaro Martinez, if missing a midfielder I would choose Zidane. I had taken him to 5 billion after a Milan-Bordeaux of Champions League, in which he had been able to turn the game alone, while Dugarry went to Milan for 18 billion: on this Berlusconi he always took Galliani. Moggi concludes by telling how his football career was short: “I wasn’t one who could come, so I decided to stop: I made a competition for the State Railways from head of management and I won, so I asked Juventus, with which I had made a child audition, to do it both as an opinionist and observer; they answered yes and from there everything began. I finished working at Civitavecchia station at 6:00 in the morning, after working all night, and at 8:00 I took the train to Turin: I have done this life for 20 years, but it takes a certain character to move forward when you realize that circumstances are not suitable for you“.
