ROMA (ITALPRESS) – After almost 5 years of work and more than 50 million euros of investments, the new home of Moto Guzzi was presented, always, proudly since its foundation in 1921, in Mandello del Lario, on the banks of Lake Como.
At the institutional ceremony took part the Governor of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, the highest local offices, the Executive President of the Piaggio Group, Matteo Colaninno, and the managing director of the Piaggio Group, Michele Colaninno.
The new home of Moto Guzzi was born in Mandello del Lario with a project, signed by American architect Greg Lynn, who is among the most ambitious in the recent history of industrial architecture. on only a new factory, not a new Museum, but a place where ingenuity and technology, myth and passion meet to generate new ideas, to imagine and build the future. Michele Colaninno, Managing Director – CEO of Piaggio Group: “It is with great pride and a little madness that we hope, after almost five years of hard work and an investment of over 50 million euros, the new life of Moto Guzzi. The project involved a total transformation of the plant and the area dedicated to museum exhibition and is the fruit of Greg Lynn’s ingenuity, a friend and internationally renowned architect, with whom we were able to combine metal and robots, silence and art. In Mandello del Lario, looking at the shores of Lake Como: all around the past and present, but also one of the most advanced motorcycle factories, a technological reference point in the world motorcycle industry. It was a non-banal challenge, which we have successfully completed, all united. Moto Guzzi is one of the most beloved and iconic motorcycle brands in the world: who drives a Moto Guzzi guides over a century of Italian history, with all the memories we have and with all hopes for the future. ”
In the same places where Moto Guzzi was born 105 years ago, between the mountain and the lake, the American designer, already winner of the Golden Lion at the Architecture Biennale in Venice, imagined a multifunctional hub in which innovation, experimentation and history meet to give life to an unpublished cultural space. A visionary project, which opens the door to a completely new experience, which blends technology and design into a futuristic harmony. The new home of Moto Guzzi goes far beyond its original function of production and preservation of memory. It is a place designed to create, experiment, live experiences and generate emotions. A site where to bring together ideas and compare different visions, where the love for a historical brand accompanies the vision of the future, to imagine it and to help realize it.
The new production plant, designed with constant attention to environmental sustainability and the efficient use of resources, equipped with 1,300 square meters of photovoltaic panels and that exploits to the maximum natural light and is developed in Class A, is born within the same industrial perimeter in which Moto Guzzi has always produced his motorcycles. The red gate on Via Parodi, which since 1921 has represented the entrance for technicians, workers, engineers and pilots of Moto Guzzi, and that over the years has become a place of pilgrimage for motorcyclists from all over the world, will still be in place, symbol of continuity with a unique company history. But beyond that entrance, after almost five years of work, there is now a modern factory, a new world reference for the motorcycle industry.
It is a factory that is located in the heart of the original site, changing it completely but with harmony and respect both historical and architectural, and consists of 5,500 square meters of new industrial buildings (for a total of 38,000 square meters of factory), which allow an increase of production capacity to more than 30,000 vehicles a year, and 380 square meters of new offices.
The simbl linesmotor, automated and the latest generation, are not born from a refurbishment of existing buildings but are a completely new plant, and are characterized by technology of absolute avant-garde.
The final assembly of the motorcycle is connected to the motor workshop by a sophisticated conveyor system, fully robotic. Here, at the end of the line, the motorcycles are taken in hand by the terrestrial drones kiloTM, designed and manufactured in Boston by Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF), and started to the final tests, minimizing the physical load for the workers and safeguarding safety. The whole production process provides the highest quality standards in machining. Adjacent to the factory and in completely new spaces, there is the Moto Guzzi Museum.
The new construction from 3,000 square meters that houses it is inspired by the technical and metallic language of motorcycles born in Mandello, many of the shapes and finishes of the new spaces, large and luminous, take back the details that characterize the motorcycles, creating a visual and material bond between the architecture and the identity of the brand. The visit to the collection will be an extraordinary journey in the history of motorcycling, for the charm and rarity of the models: more than 160 specimens meticulously restored, from the G.P., unique prototype to the world, whose construction started the history Moto Guzzi, up to the current production, passing through models become legendary and the race bikes that won 14 titles iridated in the Motomondiale.
The various sections – such as those dedicated to cinema, competitions, travel, arts or military and police means – offer a new and different museum path, to read more than a century of evolution of society, costume, technology and design, through the history and models of Moto Guzzi. The Museum will be a living and contemporary space, directly connected to the present of Moto Guzzi because, thanks to the view on the new lines of assembly, you can follow the production process of every new bike.
The new spaces also include large outdoor areas, the restored Wind Gallery and a beautiful raised terrace that gives on the large central square, decorated with a monumental mosaic of the eagle of Moto Guzzi. The outdoor spaces are pedestrian and dedicated to guests, with two exclusive squares, adorned by tall trees, to compose a promenade that is already iconic and a path overlooking the factory in full productive operation. These places, all inside the original perimeter of the factory, are designed to accommodate visitors from all over the world all year round. The new Moto Guzzi is a modern hub that also includes the large Motoplex Store space dedicated to shopping, cafeteria, workshops and events and a new auditorium for a total of over 4,200 square meters.
The new plants and the new Museum in Mandello del Lario are not the renewal of a historical factory but the creation of a new global point of reference in the production of motion and in the experience of the brand, a place of great emotional and cultural significance, a unique point of reference for the Guzzisti and fans of motorcycles from all over the world.
