Nissan will expand the use of green steel in Japan

YOKOHAMA (JAPAN) (ITALPRESS) – Nissan Motor will expand the use of low-carbon steel produced in Japan, such that in fiscal year 2025 the amount of this metal used in Nissan plants will be five times the amount used in 2023. Nissan aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent over the entire product life cycle by 2030 and achieve total carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve these goals, the company has stepped up its decarbonization efforts, starting with the sourcing of raw materials. Steel parts account for about 60 percent of the vehicle’s weight, so the use of low-carbon steel contributes significantly to making the entire vehicle life cycle more sustainable.Green steel makes it possible to cut down a substantial portion of CO2 emissions directly in blast furnaces, using low-carbon raw materials (iron) and switching from coal-fired blast furnace to electric blast furnace. In addition to Kobe Steel’s Kobenable green steel, which will be used starting in 2023 for vehicles for the Japanese market, Nissan will adopt NSCarbolex Neutral steel from Nippon Steel Corporation, JGreeX steel from JFE Steel Corporation, and carbon-reducing steel-related emissions from POSCO. During the production of these steels, CO2 reduction is achieved using the mass balance method. Nissan places sustainability at the center of its activities and is committed to accelerating its efforts to help achieve a cleaner, safer and more inclusive world.
