Obesity, global emergency: new care and focus on health adolescents and women

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – On the occasion of World Day against Obesity, attention is focused on a chronic, progressive and recurring pathology that today represents one of the main challenges of public health. Obesity is not a simple aesthetic issue or the result of incorrect individual choices, but a complex disease that requires diagnosis, grip and appropriate therapies. According to the most recent data, the weighting excess affects a significant proportion of the population, starting from the pediatric age: in Italy almost 30% of children have overweight or obesity. A fact that places our country among those with the highest prevalence in Europe. To respond to this emergency, the Associazione Medici Endocrinologi promotes the first Italian guideline for the management of obesity resistant in adolescents between 12 and 18 years, with the aim of guaranteeing homogeneous and scientific evidence. In parallel, research has made available innovative drugs that can determine weight reductions up to 15-20%, with significant benefits also on related pathologies such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 2025 also marked a historic turning point: with Law No. 149 of 3 October, obesity was recognized in Italy as a chronic disease, with the progressive inclusion of LEA performance and the establishment of a National Observatory. Particular attention deserves the health of the woman. In fertile age, overweight and obesity increase the risk of complications in pregnancy, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, miscarriage and premature birth. Obese women also have a higher risk of serious complications such as sepsis, pulmonary thromboembolism and postpartum hemorrhage. The impact also extends to future generations: epigenetic effects can increase in children the likelihood of developing obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. From childhood to menopause, obesity affects fertility and increases cancer risk, especially for endometrium carcinoma. The World Day against Obesity thus becomes an opportunity to reaffirm that prevention, multidisciplinary paths and fair access to care are fundamental tools for protecting individual and collective health, overcoming stigma and simplifications.– photo press office Associazione Medici Endocrinologi- (ITALPRESS).
