ROME (ITALPRESS) – “On Oct. 7, 2023, the Israeli people experienced one of the most dramatic pages of their history. Let us not forget the inhumane aggression perpetrated a year ago by Hamas. We always have in our eyes the massacre of thousands of defenseless civilians, including women and children, and the vilification of their bodies, shown to the world without any mercy. Our thoughts are constantly with the hostages, torn from their families and loved ones, and who are still waiting to return home.” Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a note on the occasion of the first anniversary of Hamas attacks on the Israeli population.
“Remembering and strongly condemning what happened a year ago is not a mere ritual, but the prerequisite for any political action we must conduct to restore peace in the Middle East, because the reticence that is increasingly encountered in doing so betrays a latent and rampant anti-Semitism that must concern everyone. And the public demonstrations in recent days have, unfortunately, confirmed this,” Meloni added.
“On this day, we reiterate Israel’s legitimate right to defend itself and live safely within its borders, but also the need for this to be exercised with respect for international humanitarian law. We cannot, in fact, remain insensitive to the enormous toll of innocent civilian victims in Gaza, victims twice over: first of the cynicism of Hamas, which uses them as human shields, and then of Israeli military operations,” the premier explained. “The consequences of the Hamas attack have triggered an escalation on a regional basis that could have unpredictable outcomes. It is everyone’s duty to bring back dialogue, working to achieve de-escalation. Italy, also in its capacity as chair of the G7, will continue to work for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages and the stabilization of the Israeli-Lebanese border through the full implementation of UN resolutions. We confirm our support for all mediation efforts carried out, and our commitment to work for a lasting political solution based on the two-state perspective,” Meloni concluded.
