ROME (ITALPRESS) – In recent days, the Senate gave final approval to the new Highway Code reform with the introduction of new regulations and penalties that have ignited public and political debate. Overall, based on the first information released by the media, 1 in 2 Italians (50.4 percent) say they like and agree with the new Highway Code. The new fines and penalties introduced with this reform are judged fair by 40.9% of the population, while 1 in 4 citizens consider them too high and restrictive. Going into the specifics of the main changes introduced, the regulations that garner the greatest degree of agreement (about 3 out of 4 Italians) are those related to the use of cell phones while driving, the introduction of license plates and insurance for scooters, the extension of limitations for new drivers, and penalties for drug use. Slightly less agreed, however, was the decision to aggravate the measures for drunk drivers with the inclusion of prison sentences and the compulsory use of alcolock systems that block the car’s ignition if the rate is over the limits. Finally, just under 1 in 2 Italians agree with the tightening of fines related to exceeding speed limits and license suspension for repeat offenses.
