NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election by overwhelming the “blue wall” of Democratic states (Pennsylvania already won, Wisconsin and Michigan still unofficially) that Kamala Harris was supposed to maintain to repeat Joe Biden’s success four years ago. Instead, the Democratic nominee replicated Hillary Clinton’s failure eight years ago. The question is, did Trump win because of his being Trump or because of the weakness of his opponent, Biden’s vice presidential running mate? Why did the majority of Americans who voted for Trump, succumb in this election to the attraction exerted by the Republican candidate despite having all those character ballasts? Because these voters wanted a “system breaker” in charge of the US. The slogan “Make America Great Again” (“Make America Great Again” – MAGA) was once again able to charge millions of American citizens to go out and vote. They do not like America as it is now.
Those who should have voted in avalanche to support Kamala Harris instead, that is, especially women and young people, did not do so in sufficient numbers to contain the MAGA movement. Why? Probably Kamala Harris failed to emerge as nothing more than a “reserve” put on the field too late. Harris never managed to give the impression of representing the new generation of the Democratic Party (at 60 years old new generation? Barack Obama was a 40-year-old when he won in 2008), if anything Harris appeared for what she was: the replacement for a president too old to run again; but the choice of her deputy came too late and using an opaque method. In Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump appeared before his supporters yesterday at 2 a.m. with his large family and major campaign contributors and his deputy JD Vance next to him. The soon-to-be 47th president said he will keep the promises he made when he was 45th president: making America strong and great again and safer, especially in its borders and deporting immigrants who have already entered illegally. In the end, Trump said he will also have to “heal” the country of the deep divisions that have been created over the past four years. “Success unites and will unite Americans,” Trump concluded.
Instead, America on Nov. 6, 2024, appears more divided, with its once-formidable democracy in practicing the “balance of powers” more shaky than ever-not as an electoral system but in its adherence to constitutional principles. That’s because Trump returning to the White House will have perhaps not only a majority in the Senate but a majority of Congress ready to obey, plus a Supreme Court that has already shown a willingness to gratify and protect him. So half of America woke up on Wednesday as it did to her in 2016, with a sense of deja vu disbelief, but aware that this time the nightmare of Donald Trump’s return to the White House comes after the January 2021 assault on Congress and convictions for a host of crimes. Moreover, many of the men and women who accompanied Trump the first time to the White House to serve in his first administration will no longer be there. Because even though they belonged to his party, they then called him a dangerous man for democracy, even a “fascist.” Yeah, who will be in the Oval Office with Trump this time? There has never been a single man in “command” of the United States of America. Not even Lincoln or FDR had the possible concentration of power that Trump may find himself as of Jan. 20, 2025. (ITALPRESS) – (CONTINUED). Trump of all people, at the height of narcissism, has recently repeated that he, being better than Lincoln, will be considered the best president in U.S. history. Okay, but will anyone who disagrees be an “enemy of the people”? The electoral victory for Trump’s presidency was clear, the American electoral system – so vituperated by the winner – worked. But what about the health of democracy? If the victory of Trump’s followers turns out to be clear-cut in Congress as well, American democracy risks becoming hostage to the MAGA movement and its guru.
