NEW YORK (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – After the speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, on Wednesday UNGA President Annalena Baerbock, presented the press the priorities for 2026, warning that “the multilateral system is not only under pressure, is under a heavy attack.” In a context marked by new crises, “from Caracas to Tehran”, Baerbock indicated as the main objective of the coming months “to defend this institution, its Charter and the principles enshrined in it”.
According to Baerbock, the erosion of the international order gradually advances: “The great systems do not collapse with a single big boat. Most of the time the piece is crumbled after piece.” This is why he asked the Member States to “stand up” and “take a step forward”, building “a cross-border alliance between regions” to defend the Charter and “international law and human rights”.
Among the operational priorities, Baerbock cited the implementation of the UN80 initiative, explaining that “we cannot expect the old ways of working to be sufficient” and that the Member States are “to embrace this reform much more strongly than we could expect.” But he stressed the weight of the financial crisis of the Organization, recalling that “not all Member States have paid their contributions in time” and that the “crisis of liquidity” also affects logistic aspects.
Another central dossier, the selection of the next Secretary General: Baerbock announced that “interactive dialogues with candidates were scheduled for the week of 20 April”, with presentation of the “declaration of vision” and involvement of civil society. “Our choice is an opportunity to send a clear message, in this turbulent time, about who we are and what the United Nations represents,” he said.
