PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – A complex surgery to remove a giant peritoneal liposarcoma weighing 24 kilograms and 10 grams was performed at Policlinico “Paolo Giaccone” in Palermo. The operation, which lasted four hours, was performed by the team headed by Professor Antonino Agrusa, head of the departmental operating unit of Laparascopic Surgery. The liposarcoma, a rare tumor of adipose tissue, occupied a large part of the patient’s abdomen compressing several vital organs. Through meticulous planning and the use of advanced technology, surgeons were able to remove the tumor without compromising vital organs. The tumor mass, which had infiltrated several organs, necessitated the en bloc removal of the left kidney, adrenal, transverse colon, descending colon, sigma, rectum, jejunal tract, appendix and epiploon. The 51-year-old patient, they let the Polyclinic know, had a smooth postoperative course, and will be discharged in the next few days to be taken over by Medical Oncology, where he will have to start the chemotherapy cycle. “It was a case of high complexity,” Professor Agrusa explained, “which required a preparatory phase for surgery with a multidisciplinary treatment with internist colleagues, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and oncologists. We are proud to say that the surgery was a success and the patient is now in recovery. It is a great testament to the capabilities of our team and the technology we have. I would like to thank everyone for their commitment and great teamwork, especially Professor Giuseppe Badalamenti, Professor Maurizio Raineri and Dr. Antonio Gallina, the residents and all the ward and operating room nurses who, as always, demonstrated high professionalism and competence. “The case will be the subject of a scientific publication that Agrusa and his collaborators are already working on. “I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the entire team,” says the hospital’s General Director, Maria Grazia Furnari. This intervention demonstrates the medical excellence of our hospital, which continues to invest in specialized training and cutting-edge technologies, strengthening its role as a reference for cases of high complexity, and corroborates the concept of a united team that strengthens the results by magnifying the work of everyone.”- photo press office Azienda Ospedaliera UniversitariaPoliclinico “Paolo Giaccone”, center Professor Antonino Agrusa and the team -(ITALPRESS).
