ROMA (ITALPRESS) – It all seems ready at the Rafah Pass, on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip for the entry of the Palestinians into the enclave with the opening of the transit point for the first time in over a year, as reported by the Palestinian media. Yesterday a day of checks and safety tests were conducted at the pass, and the Israeli authorities declared that today it would be open to pedestrians. After the Palestinians returning to Gaza have crossed the Rafah Pass, where a team of representatives of the Palestinian National Authority and observers of the European Union are stationed, they will be subjected to security checks at a blocking place of the Israeli Defense Forces. Israel will supervise the exit of the citizens of Gaza to Egypt only at a distance.
The Gaza Ministry of Health, managed by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, states in a note that Palestinians wishing to leave the Strip for medical care abroad will have to do so through the Kerem Shalom Pass with Israel, a mechanism used throughout the war. “With regard to the passing of patients through the Rafah Pass, at the moment there is no new information”, says the Ministry. Only the Palestinians who left Gaza during the war are allowed to return to the Strip. According to data from the office of the coordinator for activities in the Territories (Cogat), about 42,000 inhabitants of Gaza left Gaza during the war, the vast majority of which were patients seeking medical care abroad or with dual citizenship.
