Piantedosi meets the homologues of Spain, Greece and Pakistan, focus on immigration

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Today in an unpublished format they met in Rome, at the Viminale, at the invitation of the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, the Minister of Migration and the Greek Asylum Athanasios Plevris, the Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska along with the Minister of the Interior of Pakistan Mohsin Naqvi, strategic partner for migratory dynamics. “The meeting – explains the Viminale in a note – was born from a long-established dialogue between Rome and Islamabad with the aim of sharing a concrete experience that has already produced tangible operating results and that is now running to offer further ideas to develop structured partnerships with other countries of origin. At the meeting, the Ministers examined how Europe still represents a pole of attraction for many Pakistani citizens, highlighting the need for a qualitative leap in joint action. The shared priority is to combat human trafficking and transnational criminal networks more effectively, acting decisively also through the systematic struggle against document falsification.”.

The Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, stressed the value of ongoing cooperation: “The commitment of the Pakistani Government on these objectives, characterized by a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to illegal immigration, has shown that this model of cooperation works and can be successfully replicated with other key third countries. Europe must move compactly to hit criminal networks, starting from the contrast to documentary falsification, which is the main tool used by traffickers to feed irregular flows.” The strategy outlined today in Rome establishes a new model of partnership, fully shared by all Ministers, which aims to make structural four key elements of security and migration management. The plan first provides for a significant improvement in the identification procedures to make repatriations faster and more effective, accompanied by the start of common programs specifically dedicated to countering false documents. At the same time, the delegations agreed to strengthen border controls and strengthen operational cooperation between the respective police forces, which will pass through a regular and systematic exchange of information.

The Minister for the Environment then concluded by reaffirming the permanent nature of this coordination: “The format and strategy proposed today open a new season of collaboration. It was not an isolated encounter, but the beginning of a path that will see again the Ministers of Italy, Greece, Spain and Pakistan already in the coming months, to give operational continuity to this synergy and to monitor the results of our common action”. “Today’s appointment marks a change in the management of migration routes, placing technical and police cooperation at the centre of the Mediterranean and European strategy,” says Viminale.
