Plastic and aesthetic surgery, distinct disciplines with a common soul

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – Plastic surgery, from the Greek verb “plasso”: modeling, shaping, giving shape; literally plastic surgery is the surgery that shapes, reconstructs and restores shape to the human body. The etymological meaning helps to understand the dual soul of discipline: on the one hand, reconstructive plastic surgery forms the body, to return what has been lost due to diseases, traumas or malformations; on the other hand, aesthetic surgery intervenes to improve the harmony of forms and the general well-being of the individual. Two aspects of the same discipline that often enter the field in support of other specialties.

“The plastic surgery is the discipline that allows us to repair everything that is removed or removed for oncologic reasons or ruined by traumas and post-surgical wounds: somehow it is assigned to the repair of function and morphology”, said Francesco Klinger, plastic surgeon of the Materno-infantile department at the Policlinico di Milano, interviewed by Marco Klinger for Top Medicine, agency TV format.

Plastic and aesthetic surgery, explains Francesco Klinger, “they connect each other: aesthetics is aspiring to a morphology that satisfies us, reconstructive plastic is aspiring to restore morphology and function. In the oncological field there are very great demolitions, which are consequence of the removal and removal of so many tumors: in fact, in the large hospitals there are reconstructions after oncological removals even more complex. The pediatric area of the Polyclinic is quite important: the plastic surgeon does in children the same operations that he does in adults and children must pay attention especially to congenital malformations, collaborating with pediatric surgeons to restore morphology and functions. Not having plastic surgery in a large hospital means giving up a whole series of pathologies: this would be a great sin, especially for a great reality like Milan”.

It would be useless, he continues, “to do great orthopedic interventions, that is to restore the integrity of our skeleton, if we are not able to cover it or if our tissues are too damaged to cover what the orthopedic has done: think for example to the large maxillo-facial traumas of the face, in which otogen and neurosurgeon are forced to put hand but if tissues missing the reconstruction component. Our ‘school’ inculcates us to use everything we have available to restore morphology and functions: this makes us unique in our ability to multispecialist collaborations, as happens in a large hospital.”.

One of the most frequent occurrences is the bites of dogs: these, says Francesco Klinger, “are able to provoke dangerous injuries and that can leave very important charitable and functional sequels; in the hospitals where there is the possibility to consult a plastic surgeon, adequate treatment is needed in ways and times.”.

The final reflection is dedicated to the fundamental role of the plastic surgeon for breastology: “The therapeutic path of patients is very often complicated, but it is dealt differently if we are able to restore the breast. Reconstruction is a key element in the path of cancer care: good psychological predisposition helps the path of patient care and promotes the shortest possible reintegration to a path of social, working and family life.”.
