Pope Leo “Do everything to prevent a new arms race that threatens peace”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The New START Treaty signed in 2010 by the president of the United States and the Russian Federation, which represented a significant step in containing the proliferation of nuclear weapons. In renewing the encouragement to every constructive effort in favour of disarmament and mutual trust, I call for an urgent invitation not to let this instrument fall without trying to ensure a concrete and effective follow-up.” Thus Pope Leo XIV at the end of the general audience. “The current situation demands to do everything possible to prevent a new arms race which further threatens peace among nations – he emphasized. It is urgent to replace the logic of fear and distrust with a shared ethics capable of orienting choices towards the common good and of making peace a patrimony guarded by all,” he concluded.

“I urge everyone to support with prayer our brothers and sisters of Ukraine hard proven by the consequences of the bombings that have resumed affecting energy infrastructure. I express my gratitude for the initiatives of solidarity promoted in the Catholic dioceses of Poland and other countries – he added -, which are working to help the people resist in this time of great cold.”.
